Fr George Cortes

22/03/1924 - 01/11/1962

 

On November 11, 1962 the Khatau Mansion (the New India Assurance building) caught fire. Fr Cortes saved several elderly residents and finally went back for a Cocker Spaniel. When his body was found he was still clutching the dog to his chest.

The Panther (1952)

The Panther on the first floor next to the Principal's office was shot in Matheran on November 02, 1952. Refer the photograph in 'Classic Photographs'

Ceylon Trip (1954)

The scouts spent 5 weeks in Ceylon during May 1954

Taxidermy Collection

The collection of stuffed animals and birds were gifted to the school by Bro Navarro (an Ornithologist as well as a Taxidermist) of St Xavier's School in 1956.

The Porpoise (1955) - It's not a whale under the fish tank

The porpoise (below the fish tank) was caught by the scouts during their annual camp at Madh Island in 1955. Refer the photograph in 'Classic Photographs'

Alladin (1958)

Mr Dennis Roche created the sound of thunder by rolling a Shot-Put ball across the stage

A Dozen Rifles (1962)

12 Rifles were purchased for Rs 3,000 for target practice

OCA Billiards (1963)

The OCA purchased a billiards table

Inter-School Dramatics (1965)

Campion won the Inter-School Dramatics - Ordeal By Battle

Inter-School Elocution (1966)

J Pande, Maxim Mazumdar, & Jimmy Lalkaka won their respective sections

Radio Gaga (1966)

On March 25, 1966 Campion School had a full radio programme on AIR consisting of music, poetry and song

Jiving With The Governor (1970)

In 1970 the PTA Social was held at Raj Bhavan - the Governor's residence

Don Quoixote (1970)

Leeta Fonseca (a girl) played the role of Dulcenia Del Toboso

Campion won the Darah Mulla Trophy for the Highest Collection for two consecutive years - 1975 & 1976

Essay Competition (1976)

Jalaj Malhotra received a Silver Medal from Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for his entry in the Children's Competition that received lakhs of entries from 135 countries

Bourvita Quiz Contest (1977)

Andrew Braganza, Jalaj Malhotra & Ramesh Shivdasani beat Cenral School 12-1 in the finals

Rajiv Parikh won the Sub-Juniors Championship

Vivek Jairazbhoy won the Midgets Championship

1969

Campion missed the Championship by a whisker but picked up 23 certificates

The stars : F Kamdin, R Parikh, and Costa The Greek

Esben Morgensen won every event in the Midgets

1970

Campion won the Inter-School Aquatic Championship by an overwhelming 19 points

Pheroze Bulsara though still an Intermediate won the Seniors Championship and the Man Of The Meet

Cherag Bulsara won every event in the Boys Under 9 : Back, Breast, Butterfly and Free Style
